As part of the Crooked Road’s Mountains of Music Homecoming, the Birthplace of Country Music Museum will be hosting a ballads workshop on Sunday, June 11 at 2pm. Moderated by Museum Director Jessica Turner, this workshop will explore English-language balladry, an influential music tradition dating back hundreds of years.
Three prominent ballad singers — Archie Fisher of Scotland, Sheila Kay Adams of Western North Carolina, and Elizabeth LaPrelle of Southwest Virginia — will discuss balladry’s emergence in the Old World and the tradition’s re-emergence in the New World. The three singers will describe where and how they learned ballads and what those ballads mean to them and to their audiences. Additionally, this workshop will present attendees with a rare opportunity to ask master ballad singers for insights regarding ways to effectively interpret traditional as well as contemporary ballads.
This event is free and open to the public. However, registration of your place is recommended.
