Early in 2017, Glen Harlow donated a Farm and Fun Time radio transcription disc containing live tracks that have not been heard in over 60 years. The fact that an original live recording of the Stanley Brothers with the Clinch Mountain Boys from Farm and Fun Time exists at all is pretty amazing, because the discs used to record radio broadcasts in the mid-20th century are highly unstable and prone to degradation. This disc was no different – it was broken in several places, fragile, and completely unplayable.
In 2018, the Birthplace of Country Music Museum’s Farm and Fun Time radio transcription disc won the top number of votes for Virginia’s 10 Most Endangered Artifacts through the Virginia Association of Museums. The prize was $5,000 towards the preservation of the radio disc.
Join Scotty and Rene at August’s History Happy Hour for their talk “Putting the Band Back Together: Cutting-Edge Technology and a Farm and Fun Time Transcription Disc” to hear about the history of the disc, the preservation efforts that were put into it by the Northeast Document Conservation Center, and the songs that have been restored!

The Heritage Alliance is dedicated to the preservation of the architectural, historical, and cultural heritage of our region and to providing educational experiences related to history and heritage for a wide range of audiences. The Chester Inn Museum is located in the heart of downtown Jonesborough, and it chronicles the history of Jonesborough from its inception in 1779 to the present. The museum is located on the street level of the oldest commercial building in town. The Heritage Alliance and Chester Inn host a variety of educational and public programs throughout the year.
