It’s an immersive\, interactive museum with amazing sights and sounds!\n\nPanels focus on topics such as the development of the modern recording industry and the artists who recorded at the Bristol Sessions\, including Ernest V. Stoneman\, Alfred G. Karnes\, El Watson\, The Carter Family\, and Jimmie Rodgers. The Bristol Sessions were the first recordings of The Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers\, and they quickly became stars in the emerging “hillbilly” music industry. A timeline of audio technology introduces you to the different ways to produce and listen to music\, and the Variety & Voice gallery highlights the history and beauty of the iconic instruments that have created the recognizable sounds of country music. \nVisiting the core exhibits at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum is not a passive experience – we want you to explore the music through a variety of interactive and immersive experiences. Sound surrounds you throughout your visit. You can delve into local history to set the scene for the Bristol Sessions story\, and explore the sounds of the Sessions through clips of all of the songs issued by Victor Records from the Bristol recordings. In other parts of the gallery\, you can listen to the ways later musicians from Lead Belly to Nirvana have arranged some of these classic songs\, give those tunes new sounds at the mixing stations\, and belt out a song with family\, friends and fellow visitors at the sing-along station! \nYou can also engage in multiple film and theater experiences\, beginning with the Orientation Theater film “Bound to Bristol.” In the Greasy Strings Theater\, we explore the philosophy and techniques behind the playing of the 1927 Bristol Sessions recordings. You can take a pew in our small chapel to hear local gospel groups speak and sing about how faith has shaped music and our connection to it. The Immersion Theater makes you part of “the unbroken circle” – and gives you space to dance! Several shorter films explore oral histories of participants in the 1927 Bristol Sessions\, the career of Tennessee Ernie Ford\, and the impact of this music on TV and film. \n\nThe museum’s permanent exhibits won four awards at the 2015 Tennessee Association of Museums conference: Award of Excellence for Permanent Exhibits\, Award of Excellence for A/V – Mixing Station\, Award of Commendation for Chapel Film\, and the Past President’s Award of Excellence. WBCM Radio Bristol breathes new life into the classic program with a fun\, energetic show broadcasting live from the Birthplace of Country Music Museum. Hosted by producer Kris Truelsen and his house band Bill & the Belles\, Farm and Fun Time is an event the whole family can enjoy live in the studio or from home. \nABOUT THE STEEL WHEELS \nThe Steel Wheels have long been at home in the creative space between tradition and innovation\, informed by the familiar sounds of the Virginia mountains where the band was formed\, but always moving forward with insightful lyrics and an evolving sound. Having gained the experience of thousands of shows\, festivals and many miles on the road\, the stubbornly independent band has formed deep bonds with each other and the audience that sustains them. The band has their own Red Wing Roots Music Festival\, a weekend-long celebration of music\, community\, and the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Hosted by the Steel Wheels every July\, the festival provides a space for the band to shine\, from their high-energy Saturday night main stage set to their afternoon showcase with young Red Wing Academy students. At Sunday’s gospel hour you are as likely to hear Steel Wheels originals and Warren Zevon covers as you are traditional gospel fare. The weekend is rounded out by the beloved tribute set in which the band collaborates with a cadre of fellow artists to honor an influential figure in American music\, with past tributes ranging from Dolly Parton to John Prine. \nABOUT WILLI CARLISLE \nWilli Carlisle is\, according to The Washington Post\, “powerful…both down-home and brainy.” With years of collecting folklore\, playing or calling square dances\, and working in the avant-garde\, Willi Carlisle is a multi-faceted writer\, performer\, and instrumentalist. \nWith a style forged in the fire of Ozark old-time music and his ever-growing collection of antique music\, Carlisle’s musical stories hoot\, stomp\, and saunter through joys and troubles uniquely southern and timelessly true. Equally comfortable on banjo\, accordion\, fiddle\, and guitar\, Carlisle has earned accolades for his versatility with performances in the UK\, Canada\, and across the USA\, appearing with acts like Dom Flemons\, Los Texmaniacs\, Cory Branan\, and more. \nWhile his big frame and expressive voice draw comparison to old balladeers and bluesmen\, Willi sings new songs for the oldest reasons: love\, heartache\, and joy. People who watch and listen will find that he laughs and sheds a tear onstage almost as often as his audiences do\, fire- and-brimstone proof of larger-than-life songs and stories. \n URL:https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org/event/farm-and-fun-time-ft-the-steel-wheels-willi-carlisle/ CATEGORIES:Farm & Fun Time,Radio Bristol ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/2021_BCM_FFT_Oct-Web.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20211016T160000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20211016T170000 DTSTAMP:20240329T061539 CREATED:20230502T192020Z LAST-MODIFIED:20240320T203838Z UID:10023981-1634400000-1634403600@birthplaceofcountrymusic.org SUMMARY:Country Classics DESCRIPTION: URL:https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org/event/country-classics/2021-10-16/ CATEGORIES:Radio Programs ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/2017_Radio_Country-Classics_Web-Thumb.png END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20211019T140000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20211019T150000 DTSTAMP:20240329T061539 CREATED:20210726T182546Z LAST-MODIFIED:20240320T204210Z UID:10028933-1634652000-1634655600@birthplaceofcountrymusic.org SUMMARY:Joe Bussard's Country Classics DESCRIPTION:Country Classics features American roots music from the world renown collection of Joe Bussard. These stories are a mixture of true tales\, tall tales and folk tales\, that tell of the lives of migrants who left Wales and settled in America\, of the native people who had long been living there\, and those curious travelers who returned to find their roots in the old country. They were explorers\, miners\, dreamers\, hobos\, tourists\, farmers\, radicals\, showmen\, sailors\, soldiers\, witches\, warriors\, wolf-girls\, poets\, preachers\, prospectors\, political dissidents\, social reformers\, and wayfaring strangers. The Cherokee called them “The Moon-Eyed People.” \nAbout the Author: \nPeter Stevenson is a storyteller\, children’s writer\, book illustrator\, folklorist\, filmmaker\, crankie maker\, purveyor of Magical Lantern Shows\, concertina and banjo player\, organizer of the annual 3-day Aberystwyth Storytelling Festival and Y Mabinogi Project in collaboration with Aberystwyth Arts Centre\, and runs Stories@Medina\, a storytelling club that encourages collaborations with visual artists\, musicians\, dancers\, and puppeteers.
