Set in Folsom State Prison in California\, the film was seen both in the United States and Europe. Set during the 1920s\, before the 1944 California prison reform\, the story follows a sadistic prison warden who rules with a ruthless hand and the prison guard who crusades to stop him. Johnny Cash saw this movie while serving in the United States Air Force in West Germany in October 1951; and the film inspired him to write what would become his hit song “Folsom Prison Blues.” \nThe film screening will be held on the final day of the special exhibit “1968: A Folsom Redemption.” Those in attendance for the film screening will be given the opportunity to tour the special exhibit for free just prior to the film at 6:00 p.m. The film begins promptly at 6:30 p.m. URL:https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org/event/film-screening-inside-the-walls-of-folsom-prison/ CATEGORIES:Museum ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/2022_BCMM_FolsomRedemption_FilmScreening_Web.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20221014T180000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20221014T210000 DTSTAMP:20240329T062641 CREATED:20220811T132738Z LAST-MODIFIED:20220906T193431Z UID:10029329-1665770400-1665781200@birthplaceofcountrymusic.org SUMMARY:1927 Concert Series featuring Western Centuries DESCRIPTION:The Birthplace of Country Music presents the 1927 Concert Series\, an intimate concert experience\, featuring Seattle-based roots band Western Centuries at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum. \nDate: Friday\, October 14\, 2022 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. EDT \nLocation: Birthplace of Country Music \nTickets: $100\nClick Here to Purchase Tickets \nThe 1927 Concert Series is an intimate concert experience set in the “acoustically perfect” performance theater at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum. Collaboration\, inspiration and mutual admiration are what Cahalen Morrison\, Ethan Lawton\, and Jim Miller cite as the heart of their project. Western Centuries celebrates their third album as a “band’s band” with the release of “Call the Captain\,” (a tongue-in-cheek reference to the band’s lack of hierarchy)\, on Free Dirt Records. Unsurprisingly for such an egalitarian outfit\, the collection offers harsh criticism of dogmatic belief systems\, all while leading by example with a unique\, genre-defying sound. \n“Western Centuries comprises a terrific blend of what we love at WNCW: good ole’ rock-n-roll\, a healthy dose of honky-tonk twang\, and some great songwriting courtesy of Cahalen Morrison\, Jim Miller\, and Ethan Lawton.” —Martin Anderson\, Music Director & Morning Host\, WNCW-FM\, Spindale\, NC \nVisit the band’s website at WesternCenturies.com. It can be accessed on 100.1 FM in the Bristol area\, or online at ListenRadioBristol.org and on Radio Bristol’s free mobile app. Viewers may also tune in to watch through Radio Bristol’s Facebook page. \n  \nAbout Sunny Sweeney  \nSunny Sweeney\, a genre-bending\, songwriting spitfire who has spent equal time in the rich musical traditions of Texas and Tennessee\, returns with Married Alone\, the celebrated singer-songwriter’s fifth studio album and the follow-up to 2017’s critically acclaimed Trophy. Co-produced by beloved Texas musician and larger-than-life personality Paul Cauthen and the Texas Gentlemen’s multi-hyphenate Beau Bedford\, Married Alone is Sweeney’s finest work yet\, bringing together confessional songwriting\, image-rich narratives and no shortage of sonic surprises for a loosely conceptual album about loss and healing. \n  \nAbout FERD   \nFerd is a man and a band creating a fresh and vibrant interpretation of American music. Ferd is set to release their first album\, Feelin’ Like the Wind\, in 2022. The album is a musical journey into the toils of joy we all find while stumbling our way to forgiveness. \nFerd Moyse the man was raised in the Mississippi Delta. Born in the land of the Blues\, he was exposed to music from the beginning. Sometimes his parents might take him to parties where the likes of Sam Chatman may have been playing\, but when he was old enough to be left alone\, his job was staying home flipping cassette tapes for his father’s weekly ritual of recording a Mississippi Public Radio show called\, “Grass Roots.” The 3-hour show was young Ferd’s introduction into bluegrass and old time music. \nAt the same time\, music was all over the Delta and he would see things from Son Thomas playing at his church or John Hartford at an old high school auditorium. Ferd began playing guitar at an early age and began performing with various blues bands around Mississippi. A chance encounter with a Doc and Merle Watson CD turned his attention to acoustic music and into Appalachia. He moved to western North Carolina and crossed paths with the fiddle\, eventually becoming fiddler and singer with the Virginia based Hackensaw Boys. The band was turning heads making original music with a punk-rock spirit. With the Hackensaw Boys\, Ferd traveled nationally and internationally playing every festival and club stage they could find\, creating an unpretentious version of our folk music.  They eventually released albums for Netwerk and Free Dirt Record labels and even working with grammy-winning producer Larry Campbell. Ferd is also know all over by his work with the New York based bard\, Morgan O’kane. Together\, Ferd and O’kane have traveled extensively busking and playing stages from Brazil to Belfast. \n  \nAbout Bill and the Belles \nBill and the Belles is a Johnson City\, TN-based band known for combining a stringband format with their signature harmonies\, candid songwriting\, and pop sensibilities. Their delightfully deadpan new album\, Happy Again\, is full of life\, humor\, and tongue-in-cheek explorations of love and loss. Bill and the Belles is Kris Truelsen on guitar\, fiddler Kalia Yeagle\, banjo/banjo-uke player Aidan VanSuetendael\, and bassist Andrew Small. The group has a knack for saying sad things with a bit of an ironic smirk\, and anyone who’s been to one of their shows can attest that you leave feeling lighter and refreshed. This is a band that revels in the in-between: deeply engaged with the stringband tradition and eager to stretch those influences to a contemporary setting. A timeless place where Jimmie Rodgers and Phil Spector can overlap\, and a driving fiddle and banjo tune makes way for a sentimental parlor song. And while Bill and the Belles’ latest chapter offers a bigger\, moodier\, and more decade-ambiguous sound\, they maintain their status as the most refreshing stringband around. Visit the band’s website at BillandtheBelles.com for touring and more information. Beley notes: “In those days\, before the At Folsom Prison album changed the singer’s life\, our newspaper tended to write only negative stories about Cash. His own infamy had begun to overshadow the musical accomplishments of his earlier years; in short\, Cash’s career was truly on the skids at that time.” \nThough Johnny Cash was the star of the show and his visit to Folsom Prison was hugely impactful on his career\, the concert was also the story of supporting players—from the connections laid by his good friend\, Revered Floyd Gressett\, to the adventurous nature of Columbia Records’ maverick A&R man Bob Johnston\, to the calming influence of June Carter (not yet Cash)\, to the meaningful contributions of Folsom Prison inmate Glen Sherley\, whose song “Greystone Chapel” ended up on the historic album. \nGene Beley will share memories\, photos\, personal stories\, and audio clips from that fateful weekend\, giving attendees behind-the-scenes access to Johnny Cash’s redemptive visit to Folsom State Prison on January 13\, 1968\, along with other successful concerts in 1968 and 1969. \nThis program is complementary programming for 1968: A Folsom Redemption\, a special exhibit on display at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum from September 1 to October 20\, 2022. Ticket-holders to the Gene Beley talk can tour the exhibit for free from 6:00 to 6:45pm before the program begins at 7:00pm. \n1968: A Folsom Redemption is a Program of ExhibitsUSA\, a national division of Mid-America Arts Alliance and The National Endowment for the Arts. \nAbout Gene Beley \nGene Beley has an M.S. from U.C.L.A. 1967\, and a B.A. from San Jose State College\, 1963. He was lucky enough to have U.C.L.A. professors like William Dozier\, producer of Batman and The Green Hornet.  While a student at U.C.L.A.\, Beley worked at NBC TV in Burbank as a videotape coordinator and assistant to the elections unit manager. After U.C.L.A.\, he went to work for the Ventura Star Free Press daily newspaper as a general assignments reporter and photographer. During his tenure there\, he became friends with writer Ray Bradbury and singer\, Johnny Cash.  Cash invited Dan Poush\, the chief photographer on the paper\, and Beley to go to a weekend concert with him at Folsom Prison on January 13\, 1968.  That day has had a lifetime influence on Beley’s life.  Beley got to hang out with Johnny Cash\, June Carter and the band at many other concerts during the following two years. In more recent years Beley became the go-to guy for media photos on Cash and sold thousands of them through the Folsom Prison Museum’s gift shop.    \nBeley was also the only one who recorded the “Night Before Rehearsal” of the now historic Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison concert.  Sony Music made the rehearsal into a separate album and packaged it into a box set for the 50th anniversary celebration—all in 78 RPM records for collectors. Beley has also appeared in three Johnny Cash documentary movies as a commentator on Cash’s life during his redemption years of 1968-1969. \nBeley founded his own newspaper\, Country News\, from 1989 to 2005 in Morgan Hill\, CA where he did it all… sold the ads\, wrote the articles\, took the photos\, and supervised the printing on a big press at the Salinas\, Ca newspaper. In 2005\, while waiting for his editor wife\, Jill\, to retire\, Beley lived on a boat in the California Delta and finished writing his first book\, RAY BRADBURY UNCENSORED\, the only unauthorized biography on his late\, great mentor and author of books like Fahrenheit 451 and the screenwriter for Moby Dick and It Came from Outer Space\, a 1953 3-D pioneering science-fiction movie. \nIn addition to his writing and publishing career\, Beley has been an entrepreneur.  In the 1960s\, while still a reporter-photographer\, he began learning the game business with Foosball tables when no one knew what they were. When he moved from Ventura to Los Angeles to take a job as the West Coast Editor for ARCO’s publications\, he continued this side coin-op business and began a specialty of converting aging billiard rooms in bowling centers to electronic game arcades.  That’s back when pinballs were illegal but a California Supreme Court case changed all that and exploded his business.  Beley quit ARCO and never looked back from self-employment again. Beley diversified into radio controlled show-entertainment robots just before the Star Wars movie and surfed that wave with Fortune 500 type companies and department stores hiring his robots as an attention-getter at trade shows\, sales meetings and special events.  One of the first 5’ 2” fiberglass robots was sold to the Playboy Mansion for Hugh Hefner’s 1980 Christmas present and was featured in the January 1981 Playboy Magazine. \nToday Beley and his wife recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary and enjoy their retirement life in another lakefront home in Stockton\, California. Literally and figuratively scarred by his mother’s years of substance abuse\, Sequoyah keeps mostly to himself\, living with his emotions pressed deep below the surface. At least until he meets seventeen-year-old Rosemary\, another youth staying with the Troutts. \nSequoyah and Rosemary bond over their shared Native American background and tumultuous paths through the foster care system\, but as Sequoyah’s feelings toward Rosemary deepen\, the precariousness of their lives and the scars of their pasts threaten to undo them both. \nFinalist for the 2018 National Book Award for Fiction\nFinalist for the 2019 SFC Literary Prize\nLonglisted for the 2020 International Dublin Literary Award\nLonglisted for the 2019 Aspen Words Literary Prize\nNPR’s Code Switch Best Books of 2018\nA Kirkus Reviews Best Book of 2018\nA Southern Living Best Book of 2018\n2018 Reading the West Book Award Winner for Fiction\n2019 In the Margins Book Award Top Fiction Novel \nAbout the Author \nBrandon Hobson is the author of four novels. The show broadcasts live before a studio audience and is recorded for television syndication on Blue Ridge PBS\, East Tennessee PBS\, and PBS North Carolina. Farm and Fun Time can be accessed on 100.1 FM in the Bristol area\, or online at ListenRadioBristol.org and on Radio Bristol’s free mobile app. Viewers may also tune in to watch through Radio Bristol’s Facebook page. \nAbout Del McCoury Band \nEven among the pantheon of music’s finest artists\, Del McCoury stands alone. From the nascent sound of bluegrass that charmed hardscrabble hillbilly honkytonks\, rural schoolhouse stages\, and the crowning glory of the Grand Ole Opry to the present-day culture-buzz of viral videos and digital streams\, Del is the living link. On primetime and late-night television talk shows\, there is Del. From headlining sold-out concerts to music festivals of all genres\, including one carrying his namesake\, there is Del. Where audiences number in the tens of thousands\, and admirers as diverse as country-rock icon Steve Earle and jamband royalty Phish count as two among hundreds\, there is Del. \nAbout Willie Watson \nFor nearly two decades\, Willie Watson has made modern folk music rooted in older traditions. He’s a folksinger in the classic sense: a singer\, storyteller\, and traveler\, with a catalog of songs that bridge the gap between the past and present. On Folksinger Vol. 2\, he acts as a modern interpreter of older songs\, passing along his own version of the music that came long before him. \nAbout Green Grass Cloggers \nWith feet flying and dresses swishing\, the Green Grass Cloggers have been a force in traditional dance for over 50 years. Formed in 1971\, they are a high-energy percussive dance team based in North Carolina that has preserved and added to traditional steps and routines reflecting those of folk tradition. Through national and international travel\, they have captivated audiences at Carnegie Hall\, the Kennedy Center Honors\, the Philadelphia Folk Festival and countless other venues. In 2014\, the group was inducted into the Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame and America’s Clogging Hall of Fame. \nAbout Bill and the Belles \nWith their enchanting debut album\, “Dreamsongs\, Etc.\,” Bill and the Belles have captured the freewheeling\, lighthearted approach to music that has endeared them to listeners of every generation. With a spirited sound that falls somewhere between old-time country and vaudeville\, the group puts its own spin on a golden era of music\, specifically the 1920s\, 1930s\, and 1940s. It’s the roots and far-reaching branches of those seminal recordings that fuels the lineup of each Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion. \nBristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion takes place in Historic Downtown Bristol\, VA-TN on State Street and the surrounding area. Raised in a musical family\nsteeped in the mountain culture of the region\, Keel began from an early age to forge a distinctive sound\, taking traditional music and infusing it with modern light. With the acoustic guitar Keel has brought the flat picking form to its highest level of sophistication and sonic power with his muscular\, yet refined style of playing. As a composer and singer\, Keel integrates raw honesty and charming grit to form a unique brand of music he calls ‘experimental folk’\, songwriting that is filled with reality\, imagination\, imagery and mood. He has appeared on over 20 albums\, 12 of which he produced\, and has written songs that have been recorded and performed by distinguished artists including Grammy-award winners Del McCoury and The Infamous Stringdusters. Keel has collaborated and continues to merge creative forces with some of the greatest artists in modern roots music such as Tyler Childers\, Billy Strings\, Al DiMeola\, Tony Rice\, Keller Williams and Sam Bush\, to name a few. \nWoody Woodworth & The Piners \nHailing from Richmond\, Virginia\, Woody Woodworth & The Piners are part of the newest revival of country music in Virginia. Established in 2016\, the Piners are named for the bygone expression to Pine – a deep longing for something or someone. Influenced by Virginia’s deep musical history and Appalachian culture\, Woody Woodworth & The Piners fuse storytelling with country\, bluegrass\, and rock and roll to create a sound that can be described as Appalachian alt-country with a steady shot of southern rock. \nOld Line Skiffle Combo \nMembers of the Old Line Skiffle Combo consider Bristol their second home. The Maryland-based sextet first performed at Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion in 2004 and was an event staple for many years. Not missing a beat\, the OLSC is reuniting its original members for a special\, pre-festival kick-off show for Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion and bringing a fine batch of their signature high-energy\, non-stop locomotive sounds to cut a rug to! Combining their love of old timey music mixed with hot jazz\, western swing\, vaudeville\, rockabilly and the general zaniness of the 1920s and 30s\, this sextet of creative and energized musicians will keep you on your toes!  Not to be missed! \n  \n  \n  \n  URL:https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org/event/bristol-rhythm-roots-reunion-festival-kick-off-concert/ CATEGORIES:Festival,Festival Activities ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/2022_BRRR_ThursdayKickOffShow_Web-1.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20220907 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20220912 DTSTAMP:20240329T062641 CREATED:20220607T165746Z LAST-MODIFIED:20220921T202931Z UID:10021484-1662508800-1662940799@birthplaceofcountrymusic.org SUMMARY:VMFA on the Road Artmobile at Birthplace of Country Music Museum DESCRIPTION:Event:  Virginia Museum of Fine Arts on the Road Artmobile at the Museum! \nAbout: The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is bringing traveling art exhibitions and educational offerings to audiences across the state with VMFA on the Road: An Artmobile for the 21st century! It examines the complex role of portraiture across cultures and time periods. Beginning with the Japanese artist Kitagawa Utamaro\, and concluding with American artist Gordon Stettinius\, the exhibit explores how artists have used portraiture as a means to both reveal and obscure their sitter’s identity. Traditionally\, portraiture has been used to highlight the sitter’s wealth\, power\, beauty\, virtue\, and intelligence and has been reserved for the elite of society. Several of the works in this exhibition maintain this tradition while others employ it as means to explore truths about the nature of art\, the way we perceive beauty\, and the way culture influences and reflects personal identity. \nFamily Visit Guide: A Family Visit Guide is available online\, and paper copies will be available at the Artmobile for visitors to use and take with them. \nCOVID Protocols: The VMFA on the Road Artmobile is following these protocols: \n*Not requiring visitors to wear masks on the artmobile \n*Have a maximum of 15-20 persons on board at the same time \n*There’s no time limit on general visits \n*30-minute school tour group visits \n*Hand sanitizer will be available \n****************************************************************************** \nDROP-IN VISITORS \nDrop-in visitors can view the Artmobile for free on Wednesday\, September 7 and Thursday\, September 8\, 2021 at times when school groups are not booked\, see below (BOOKED and OPEN FOR DROP-IN VISITORS times will be marked as such). \nDrop-ins are also welcome Friday\, September 9–Sunday\, September 11 (see open times below) because the Artmobile will be just outside the Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion festival gates\, but entry into the festival footprint requires a BRRR 2022 wristband.  \nTake an art break! The exhibit highlights Cash’s golden era from the January 1968 Folsom Prison album recording to a March 1\, 1969 concert in Anaheim\, California\, when he was getting ready to launch his network television show. The collection include a wide range of intimate photos with friends and family to a backstage meeting with country music legend Merle Haggard with the Man in Black. \nIn January 1968\, Johnny Cash was at a crossroads. His music career\, in a slow decline for several years\, was in need of a smash hit. He had recently straightened out his personal life\, and leadership changes at his record label meant he was able to finally convince them of the merits of a live recording in a prison setting. Cash had been performing for inmates as far back as 1957\, when he received a stream of requests from prisoners who identified with the man who sang “Folsom Prison Blues.” This connection developed with prisoners during these concerts had made him increasingly sympathetic to those he would later call “the downtrodden.” \nWorking as freelance journalists\, photographer Dan Poush and writer Gene Beley met with Cash and his family the day before the concerts began\, at the invitation of Reverend Floyd Gressett\, a friend of Cash’s who ministered to inmates and helped set up the show at Folsom State Prison with Recreation Director Lloyd Kelley. After practicing the set with the Tennessee Three at Hotel El Rancho the night before\, on January 13\, 1968\, Cash\, along with opening acts Carl Perkins and the Statler Brothers\, performed two separate shows in the dining hall at Folsom. Notable for capturing Cash’s ability to connect with his audience\, the recordings crackled with the excitement of an adoring crowd. The resulting album\, At Folsom Prison\, was released four months later to critical and popular acclaim. \nBeley’s first-person account of those days\, and his knowledge of the storylines at work behind the scenes\, make this a fascinating exploration of the little-known aspects of a well-known event in popular culture. 1968: A Folsom Redemption takes the viewer right into the heart of this pivotal moment in the life and career of one of the twentieth century’s most important and cherished musical personalities. \nThis candid and personal photography exhibition covers a critical juncture in the career of Johnny Cash\, taking the viewer right into the heart of this pivotal moment in the life and career of one of the 20th century’s most important and cherished musical personalities. \nThis exhibit is a Program of ExhibitsUSA\, a national division of Mid-America Arts Alliance and The National Endowment for the Arts. It can be accessed on 100.1 FM in the Bristol area\, or online at ListenRadioBristol.org and on Radio Bristol’s free mobile app. Viewers may also tune in to watch through Radio Bristol’s Facebook page. \n  \nAbout Fireside Collective \nA quintet who cheerfully disregard every kind of one-dimensional label that might be attached to their music\, Fireside Collective has been on a roll since emerging seven years ago from the fertile roots music scene of Asheville\, North Carolina. In quick order\, the progressive bluegrass group released its debut album\, won the 2016 Band Contest at MerleFest\, earned an International Bluegrass Music Association Momentum Band of the Year nomination and embarked on an ambitious touring schedule that’s earned an enthusiastic reception from traditional bluegrass to wide-ranging\, eclectic music festival audiences alike. \nBlending the characteristic interplay of bluegrass instrumentation and harmonies with strong original material and exuberant energy\, Fireside Collective has drawn on folk\, blues\, funk and a wide variety of bluegrass sounds to create a distinctive body of work that’s all their own. \n  \nAbout Larry Bellorin and Joe Troop  \nLarry Bellorín & Joe Troop were destined to make music together. Larry hails from Monagas\, Venezuela and is a legend of Llanera music. Joe is from North Carolina and is a GRAMMY-nominated bluegrass and oldtime musician. Larry was forced into exile and is an asylum seeker in North Carolina. Joe\, after a decade in South America\, got stranded back in his stomping grounds in the pandemic. Larry works construction to make ends meet. Joe’s acclaimed “latingrass” band Che Apalache was forced into hiatus\, and he shifted into action working with asylum seeking migrants. \nCurrently based in the Triangle of North Carolina\, both men are versatile multi-instrumentalists and singer-songwriters on a mission to show that music has no borders. As a duo they perform a fusion of Venezuelan and Appalachian folk music on harp\, banjo\, cuatro\, fiddle\, guitar\, maracas and whatever else they decide to throw in the van. The program they offer features a distinct blend of their musical inheritances and traditions as well as storytelling about the ways that music and social movements coalesce. Hillbilly celebrates the humanity and diversity of this misunderstood American populace at a time when we all need to understand each other a little better.” – IndieWire\nDirected by Emmy-Nominees Sally Rubin and Ashley York \nFeaturing bell hooks\, Ronny Cox and Billy Redden from Deliverance\, director Michael Apted\, activists and writers Frank X Walker\, Crystal Good\, and Silas House\, and musicians Sam Gleaves and Amythyst Kiah\, hillbilly arrives at a crucial moment\, confronting depictions of Appalachian and other rural people on a broad\, national level. \n \nThis movie is for anyone who is a hillbilly or anyone who knows one. \nAppalachia is no stranger to the complexity of media representation. Since our country’s inception\, there has been a palpable divide between Urban and Rural America. Within this great divide\, certain regions are viewed as “other\,” and blamed for America’s social ills. \nSince the presidential election\, the cultural divide in America has expanded. Stereotyping and slurs are rampant\, finger-pointing and name-calling abound. hillbilly goes on a personal and political journey into the heart of the Appalachian coalfields\, exploring the role of media representation in the creation of the iconic American “hillbilly\,” and examining the social\, cultural\, and political underpinnings of this infamous stereotype. \nFilmed in Georgia\, Kentucky\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, Virginia\, and West Virginia\, hillbilly uncovers an unexpected set of artists\, poets\, activists\, queer musicians\, “Affrilachian” poets\, and intersectional feminists — all unexpected voices emerging from this historically misunderstood region. \nHillbilly is a timely and urgent exploration of how we see and think about poverty and rural identity in contemporary America\, offering a call for dialogue during this divisive time in U.S. history. \nThis film screening is complementary programming to the museum special exhibit “It’ll Tickle Yore Innards!”: A (Hillbilly) History of Mountain Dew\, on display now through August 7. For years\, I wrote songs and played shows on borrowed guitars\,” Dasher recalls. “Eventually\, I scrubbed enough toilets to buy my first Gibson.” \nAside from Hannah’s work ethic\, her strong\, non-conforming\, swaggy lyrics set her apart from her peers early on\, earning her the nickname Hannah Damn Dasher. Accompanying her big hair and her larger-than-life personality is a voice that’s even bigger. Listen closely and you’ll hear remnants of Lorrie Morgan\, Dolly Parton\, Aretha Franklin and Alan Jackson. It all makes for a sound that’s familiar — like your favorite 90’s country — yet uniquely fresh. \nIn fact\, that fresh take on the familiar further sets Dasher apart from every other country music hopeful who moves to Nashville to chase the neon dream. Her carefully crafted songs\, classically country voice and presence on stage give her a leg up in a genre where fitting in just wasn’t a good fit. \nAnd already\, it’s starting to pay off. During the quarantine summer of 2020\, Dasher decided to try out her comedic\, country music-infused cooking series\, “Stand By Your Pan” on TikTok. Within six months\, her platform grew from 12\,000 followers to over a million. “People appreciate that I’m authentically unfiltered Hannah\, and I’m very confident in who God made me to be\,” she says. \nQuite the entertainer beyond the kitchen\, the triple threat is now a Fender Next Artist\, and the face of the new 2021 Telecaster coming this fall. “Jaren Johnston (from the band The Cadillac Three) gave me my first electric guitar a few years ago and said\, ‘Now here. Learn it!’ So I did. I don’t know the notes\, I just play by ear.” \nWhile Dasher’s ascent has been almost a decade in the making\, someone once told her\, “Reba wasn’t built in a day.” So she’s comfortable with the slow climb\, because she’s surrounded herself with a Nashville family of songwriters\, musicians\, producers and industry allies who push her to be better. “So many people have had instrumental talks with me about getting out of my own way. It’s hard to relinquish control of your art and to navigate that\, while keeping everyone around me inspired.” \nHer latest release The Half Record — due out July 9 — is the music that Dasher is very proud to be sharing with the world. “I like to leave things better than I found them. This is so much bigger than me\,” she shares. \nBeing born and raised near Savannah\, Georgia\, Dasher likes to say that she’s been keeping country country since 1989. And while she did have some rock and Motown influences in the mix\, the cassettes she wore out when she was growing up were Patsy Cline’s Greatest Hits\, Clint Black’s Killin’ Time and Alan Jackson’s A Lot About Livin’ (And a Little ’bout Love). \nNow that she’s fully immersed in the grown-up life of a country singer-songwriter\, Dasher admits that from a very young age\, she was not merely a fair-weather fan. She was the kind of fan who made country music her life’s mission. “I didn’t like to read books\, but I’d read song lyrics and liner notes front to back. I was that nerdy kid who knew who Keith Stegall was when I was 8 years old\,” she admits. “And I always wanted to be a country singer. Hell\, I practiced my CMA Awards speeches in front of my bathroom mirror with a hairbrush as a little girl.” \nOnce she’d moved to Nashville after graduating from college\, Dasher balanced her work at Bass Pro Shops with her work honing her songwriting craft. It paid off just a year and a half after she arrived\, when she signed a publishing deal in 2012.But it wasn’t until 2017 that she signed with Sony Music Nashville. “I knew I wanted to be a singer\, but then I discovered songwriting\,” Dasher recalls. “Then I thought\, ‘Maybe I want both. Maybe I don’t just want to be Reba McEntire. Maybe I want to be Alan Jackson as well.’ It took five years between my publishing and record deals because I felt like I couldn’t be the kind of artist I wanted to be until the songs were in place.” \n“I was loading up my gun for the gun fight\,” she says of the years she spent learning how to trust her pen. “I even had an early cut with Brad Paisley — a co-write with Paisley\, Chris DuBois and Brent Anderson — called ‘Go to Bed Early.’ It was an idea I’d started working on right around the time I got fired from Bass Pro Shop.” \nOnce Sony discovered and then signed Dasher\, she says\, her team was careful about the timing of her releases\, because in country music\, timing can be everything. “They never made me feel like I wasn’t enough\,” the CMT Next Women of Country says. And now that the time is right\, Dasher is all in. She was born to entertain\, and now she’s devoted 32 years of hard work to perfecting her art. It shows at all her shows. Hannah Damn Dasher\, indeed. \n  URL:https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org/event/1927-society-concert-series/ CATEGORIES:Special Events ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/2022_BCM_1927ConcertSeries_HannahDasher_Web.jpg END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
