The Los Angeles Times called them “the most influential harmony team in the history of country music\,” but Emmylou Harris may have hit closer to the heart of the matter\, saying “there was something scary and washed in the blood about the sound of the Louvin Brothers.” For readers of Johnny Cash’s irresistible autobiography and Merle Haggard’s My House of Memories\, no country music library will be complete without this raw and powerful story of the duo that everyone from Dolly Parton to Gram Parsons described as their favorites: the Louvin Brothers. \nAbout the Author \nCharlie Louvin was an American country music singer and songwriter. He is best known as one of the Louvin Brothers\, and was a member of the Grand Ole Opry since 1955. \nBenjamin Whitmer was born and raised on back-to-the-land communes and counterculture enclaves ranging from Southern Ohio to Upstate New York. One of his earliest and happiest memories is of standing by the side of a country road with his mother\, hitchhiking to parts unknown. Since then\, he’s been a factory grunt\, a vacuum salesman\, a convalescent\, a high-school dropout\, a graduate student\, a semi-truck loader\, an activist\, a kitchen-table gunsmith\, a squatter\, a college professor\, a dishwasher\, a technical writer\, and a petty thief. EDT \nLocation: Zoom (free but registration required) \nJoin us on Tuesday\, June 1\, at 7:00pm EST for a screening of filmmaker Beth Harrington’s new short film (22 minutes)\, The Musicianer\, followed by a discussion with Beth and music from Petunia\, the lead actor/musician. This fictional film – Beth calls it “Supernatural Americana” – is based around a yodeling hillbilly singer from the 1920s who finds himself immortal\, playing his music down the years and intersecting with some present-day musicologists. One of Beth’s most well-known films is The Winding Stream: The Carters\, the Cashes\, and the Course of Country Music\, and a lot of the research that went into this Carter Family film found its way into The Musicianer\, especially the history of the early recording industry\, talking pictures\, etc. Beth will share the story behind the making of the film\, how it intersects with the work she did on The Winding Stream\, and much more! \nThe Musicianer has been part of numerous film festivals as an official selection\, and it has won several awards\, including Best Short at Rails to Reel in Meridian\, Mississippi (Jimmie Rodgers’ hometown!)\, Best Music Film at the Franklin International Indie Film Festival\, and Winner at the Director’s Cut International Film Festival. \n* “Beth Harrington Presents a Screening and Discussion of The Musicianer” is free and open to the public\, but please register to attend below. Donations are welcome and help to support free and low-cost museum programming. \nREGISTER HERE \nDONATE HERE \nBeth Harrington \nBeth Harrington is an independent producer\, director and writer\, whose fervor for American history\, music and culture has led to a series of award-winning and critically acclaimed films. \nWhether exploring the aftermath of the eruption of Mount Pinatubo\, chronicling the history of the Aleutian Islands or drinking up the world of craft beer brewing\, Beth seamlessly straddles the line between objective journalistic integrity and a passion for every subject. As a result\, her films are both thought provoking and heartfelt. \nBeth’s most recent works\, The Winding Stream – The Carters\, The Cashes and The Course of Country Music and the Grammy-nominated Welcome to the Club – The Women of Rockabilly\, reflect her long-standing love of music. A rock-and-roll singer and guitarist\, she is most noted for her years as a member of Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers on the Warner Bros. Sire Records label. \nPetunia \nPetunia is more than just an entertainer\, he’s a modern musical enigma. Imagine that David Lynch and Nick Cave had a hillbilly baby\, that yodeled…or Tom Waits meets Elvis at Woody Guthrie’s hobo junction. This is just one way of describing the man known simply as Petunia. He’s an adventure seeker\, a poker player\, and a mysterious stranger. He’s been referred to as “The Savior of Country Music”\, and a man who exists in a different era\, bringing the past forth as something new to be celebrated and not forgotten. \nPetunia grew up in rural Quebec\, in exactly the sort of surroundings that a country musician would find idyllic\, with old dilapidated barns\, secret forts\, and acres of unspoiled land. As an adult\, the wandering spirit took a firm hold on his life\, so he set out on the road\, playing every major street corner across Canada and throughout the NYC subway system\, before graduating to full-fledged touring musician. When he’s not on the road playing shows\, Petunia is also involved in the theatre world: building side projects\, writing scores\, acting\, or collaborating with theatre artists. Petunia & The Vipers played Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion in 2017. She is restless\, curious\, and wry. She listens to Black Flag\, speaks her mind\, and joins her grandmother’s fight against mountaintop removal mining almost in spite of herself. “I write by ear\,” says Robert Gipe\, and Dawn’s voice is the essence of his debut novel\, Trampoline. She lives in eastern Kentucky with her addict mother and her Mamaw\, whose stance against the coal companies has earned her the community’s ire. Jagged and honest\, Trampoline is a powerful portrait of a place struggling with the economic and social forces that threaten and define it. Inspired by oral tradition and punctuated by Gipe’s raw and whimsical drawings\, it is above all about its heroine\, Dawn\, as she decides whether to save a mountain or save herself; be ruled by love or ruled by anger; remain in the land of her birth or run for her life. \nAbout the Author \nBorn in North Carolina in 1963 and raised in Kingsport\, Tennessee\, Robert Gipe is a child of the Tennessee Eastman Company\, Pals Sudden Service\, and the voice of the Vols\, John Ward. A graduate of Wake Forest University\, Gipe earned his Masters in American Studies at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He has worked as a pickle packer\, a forklift driver\, and eventually came to work as Marketing & Educational Services Director for Appalshop in Whitesburg\, Kentucky where he worked with public school teachers on arts and education projects. Since 1997 he has been Director of the Appalachian Program at Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College in Cumberland\, Kentucky\, and is a producer of Higher Ground\, a series of community musical drams based on oral histories and grounded in discussion of local issues. He is also the faculty coordinator of the Crawdad student arts series. Based on a true story\, author Gloria Houston’s joyous recounting of her great-aunt Arizona’s quiet yet meaningful life reminds us of the special place a great teacher can hold in our hearts—even after we’ve grown up. \nArizona was born in a log cabin her papa built in the Blue Ridge Mountains. She grew into a tall girl who liked to sing\, square-dance\, and—most of all—read and dream of the faraway places she would visit one day. Arizona never did make it to those places. Instead she became a teacher\, helping generations of children in the one-room schoolhouse which she herself had attended. \nThis book is shared with permission from Harper Collins. \nAbout the Author \nDr. Gloria Houston wrote over 10 books that were published in numerous languages. Her books have won and been listed on more than forty awards and awards lists. Over the years\, she taught at the University of South Florida and Western Carolina University and was lovingly referred to as “Ms. Mack” in earlier years teaching in Florida and Texas schools grades K-12. She frequently identified herself as “first\, last and always\, a teacher.” Her books are filled with Appalachian mountain history and culture with great attention to detail woven throughout the characters and scenery with many of the character’s based on her relatives. Her “Littlejim” series are books about her father\, J. Myron Houston’s life and “The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree” features her Mother\, Ruth Houston\, as the main character. She penned a tribute to teachers in “My Great Aunt Arizona”\, a story about her Aunt Arizona Hughes\, and librarians are the stars of “Miss Dorothy and Her Bookmobile”. In each book she wrote of her childhood experiences and stories handed down through her family and community. Dr. Houston was designated as a Distinguished Educator by the International Reading Association. She won the National Excellence in Literacy Education Award\, and was named a Distinguished Alumni at Appalachian State University. She is listed in Who’s Who in America\, Outstanding Women of the Twenty-First Century\, Who’s Who in the Southwest\, Who’s Who in Education\, International Who’s Who of Authors\, Something about the Author\, Contemporary Authors as well as other references. Houston passed away at the age of 75 in 2016. Hamessley about her book Unlikely Angel: The Songs of Dolly Parton. Dolly Parton’s success as a performer and pop culture phenomenon has overshadowed her achievements as a songwriter. But she sees herself as a songwriter first\, and with good reason. Parton’s compositions like “I Will Always Love You” and “Jolene” have become American standards with an impact far beyond country music. Hamessley will share insights into the impact of Parton’s background on her songs; the ways that those songs have explored women’s lives\, poverty\, love and heartbreak; and the genius and creativity of Parton’s songwriting. \nLydia Hamessley is Professor of Music at Hamilton College (Clinton\, NY) where she teaches courses in country music\, medieval and Renaissance music\, music in film\, and world music. She received her Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Minnesota in 1991. She writes on old-time and bluegrass music\, with an emphasis on women and Southern Appalachia. She has also written about the banjo in nineteenth-century America; Appalachian murder ballads; and Peggy Seeger. She appeared in the BBC2 documentary Dolly Parton: Here I Am\, which is currently available on Netflix. She is also a clawhammer banjo player. \n“Unlikely Angel: The Songs of Dolly Parton” is free and open to the public\, but please register to attend below. Their stories\, reflective of their very different backgrounds\, reveal insights about women\, race\, food\, and culture in 20th-century America. \nFeaturing:\nPaula Johnson\, Curator\, National Museum of American History\nAshley Rose Young\, Historian\, National Museum of American History URL:https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org/event/lena-richard-and-julia-child-two-women-who-changed-culinary-history/ LOCATION:VA CATEGORIES:Museum ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Because-of-Her-Story-Logo.png END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20210303T190000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20210303T203000 DTSTAMP:20240328T075758 CREATED:20210224T050000Z LAST-MODIFIED:20210224T050000Z UID:10021427-1614798000-1614803400@birthplaceofcountrymusic.org SUMMARY:African American Women's Activism DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Women’s History Month with Smithsonian Affiliations Virtual Scholar Talk – African American Women’s Activism in Historical Perspective \nDate: Wednesday\, March 3\, 2021 \nTime: 7:00 p.m. EST \nLocation: Online\, Zoom \nTickets: Free event\, must pre-register \nREGISTER HERE \nAfrican American Women’s Activism in Historical Perspective\n\nJoin Smithsonian Affiliations for this program highlighting objects related to African American women’s history in the Smithsonian collections. But Moses\, wanting to become a preacher like his daddy was\, left Kate time and again to look after the kids while he went out in search of a sign from God. Though he warned them about the evils of playing the fiddle\, a kind of music he likened to the devil’s own laughter\, it passed the time for his bride and children\, and soon became not just a way of life for the Baileys\, but a curse that would last for generations.\n\nAbout the Author \nBorn in Grundy\, Virginia\, Garden & Gun Magazine refers to Lee Smith as a “great southern storyteller.” She is author of many novels\, including the New York Times bestseller The Last Girls\, and most recently Guests On Earth. When her mother sews her a coat made of rags\, the girl is mocked by classmates for being poor. Traditionally the role and widespread recognition of women in country music has been relegated to a handful of “superstars” who rose to fame in the 1960s and 1970s. But female country artists have been making recordings since the beginnings of country music recording. The impact of these pioneering artists has been somewhat overshadowed by flashier\, pop-oriented female artists in recent years\, but without these trailblazing recordings\, the country music industry as we know it would not exist. With this talk\, Bailey George will take a look at some of the forgotten female artists\, musicians\, writers\, and performers from days long before there were coal miner’s daughters or many-colored coats. \nBailey George has been collecting and researching vintage music since he was 11 years old. He is the host of the popular Honky Tonk Hit Parade on Radio Bristol\, playing country music from the 1940s and 1950s every Wednesday\, 3:00–5:00pm. In addition to his archival work and his time on-air\, Bailey also performs in a duo with Jessica Stiles as “Bailey George and Jukebox Jess.” \n“Before Coal Miner’s Daughters and Multi-Colored Coats: Pioneering Women in Country Music” is free and open to the public\, but please register to attend below.
