These women were from the hills and hollers of the rural south\, who helped plant musical seeds for all of us. My momma could have been in that exhibit\, since she taught us kids old ballads and immigrant songs\, gave us a love for music\, and access to banjos\, fiddles\, and a wash-tub bass. It’s great to see the seeds growing\, from Mother Maybelle Carter all the way to my fellow-Tennessean Amythyst Kiah.” ~ Dolly Parton \nVisit the “I’ve Endured: Women in Old-Time Music” website. \nThe Birthplace of Country Music Museum in Historic Downtown Bristol honors the hidden heroines\, activists\, and commercial success stories of women who have impacted the roots and branches of old-time music in a new special exhibit\, “I’ve Endured: Women in Old-Time Music\,” on display March 23 – December 31\, 2023. Created by a women-led content team\, this will be the first exhibition curated by the museum that will eventually travel to other institutions. \nA commercial career in music may never have occurred to many women tending large families and domestic responsibilities. Women were frequently tied to the home. Others were discouraged or even forbidden by their husbands to keep their music going at home or to play in public. Some women were influenced by their church leaders to stay away from dancing and the music that surrounded it. In many cases women had fewer opportunities than men to make a viable career from their music. Nonetheless\, several found ways to work within these challenges – and move beyond them – in order to pass on old-time music\, and the related genres of country and bluegrass\, as performing musicians or in other roles in music. \n“I’ve Endured: Women in Old-Time Music” spotlights commercial success stories and iconic musicians like Mother Maybelle and Sara Carter\, Ola Belle Reed\, Elizabeth Cotten\, Lily May Ledford\, Hazel Dickens\, Etta Baker\, and Alice Gerrard. It also includes women who have impacted the genre in other ways\, such as Audrey Hash Ham\, Florence Reece\, Helen White\, Anne Romaine\, and Bernice Johnson Reagon. By showcasing today’s torchbearers and innovators\, the exhibit also illuminates the ways that women are carrying the old-time genre forward and the work still to be done to open it up to other underrepresented communities. Women like Rhiannon Giddens\, Martha Spencer\, Carla Gover\, Suzy Thompson\, and Amythyst Kiah are but a few examples of students of old-time who are blazing new trails. The content development team interviewed dozens of contemporary female old-time musicians and industry professionals as part of the exhibit. \nSpecial Thanks \nThis exhibit has been funded in part by grants from Virginia Humanities\, the Massengill-DeFriece Foundation\, and the IBMA Foundation\, along with local women-led business sponsorship from Friends of Southwest Virginia\, The Crooked Road\, Artemis Consulting Services\, LLC\, Bristol Ballet\, Suzi Griffin (Studio 6)\, Kim Sproles (KS Promotions)\, and Kayla Stevenson (Matte Nail Bar). East Tennessee Foundation Arts Fund provided grant funding for related public programming\, and the Virginia Tourism Corporation provided grant funding for the exhibit’s website. The Nashville-raised five-piece is a fusion of contemporary country\, Americana and folk-rock stacked on a foundation of bluegrass. \n“We’re trying to find our own niche within popular country music today\,” says Sam McCullough (drums). “But not straight down the middle.” \nThe band\, which has been together in some iteration since members were in high school\, is comprised of Barton Davies (banjo)\, Ford Garrard (bass/standing bass)\, Sam McCullough (drums) Willard Logan (mandolin\, acoustic/electric guitar) and William Reames (acoustic guitar/harmonica). William and Willard played in a middle school garage rock band together\, but it wasn’t until William met Barton in high school English class that Boy Named Banjo started to take shape. \nBarton had just started playing banjo when he heard William listening to bluegrass music. He suggested they jam together\, which led to them asking Willard to join them. The guys started playing music on the streets of downtown Nashville\, which is where the name “Boy Named Banjo” was created\, outside of the famed Robert’s Western World. While playing\, a man walked by and yelled to Barton “Play that banjo boy!” Later that night William came up with the name Boy Named Banjo\, which has stuck ever since. \nNot only did the band continue to steadily release music independently\, releasing two albums and an EP\, the band developed its one-of-a-kind live show over the years until it attracted Mercury Records Nashville’s attention in 2019. Boy Named Banjo had just launched their most extensive headlining tour to date when the pandemic commanded them to drive the 36 hours from Portland\, Oregon\, back to Nashville and put their lives on hold for the next 18 months. They became the first act that Universal Music Group Nashville signed via Zoom about two weeks later. \nBoy Named Banjo released their debut EP\, Circles\, in summer of 2021. The collection includes seven tracks co-written by members of the band including the compassionate “Go Out Dancing\,” which the band says takes on a much larger meaning post pandemic thinking “if it really was ending” what would we do? They used the time to write songs and hone in on their sound with writer/producer Oscar Charles (Carly Pearce\, Charlie Worsham\, Elvie Shane). With a catalogue of songs to choose from\, and recent time spent in the studio\, the guys are deciding what to run with next. \nThe band is currently out on the road playing some of country music’s largest festivals including Dierks Bentley’s Seven Peaks\, Country Jam\, and they recently made their CMA Fest debut playing at the Ascend Amphitheatre Nighttime Concert. They head out on the road this fall as direct support to multi-PLATINUM singer/songwriter\, Kip Moore on his Fire on Wheels Tour. \nFor more information on Boy Named Banjo\, visit their website here. They are as uninhibited and unpredictable as the eclectic San\nFrancisco Bay Area that claims them\, and for over 15 years their experiments\nhave always proven sharp-witted and musically dazzling. They’re living proof that\nin music\, evolution and intelligent design are entirely compatible. \nThe band has been praised by the Chicago Tribune for its “near-ideal balance of\nirreverence\, chops\, discipline\, and originality.” The folk and roots underpinnings\nthat have long been a Waybacks hallmark are still there\, but after years of\nplaying a huge range of venues and festivals\, The Waybacks contuine to evolve. \n“The whole spirit of improvisation – that’s always been the cornerstone of this\nband for me\,” says singer\, songwriter and guitarist James Nash. “Through all the\nstylistic changes and regardless of the instruments we’re playing\, to me the fun of\nthis band has always been that in some ways I can do whatever I feel like doing\nat any moment.” \nThat improvisational spirit meets the band’s dazzling turn-on-a dime skills at their\nannual Hillside Album Hour performances at MerleFest\, which for the past 15\nyears have become a highlight of the festival. \nA four-piece with a full arsenal of acoustic and electric instruments\, configured\naround the hot guitar of James Nash and the fiddle virtuosity of Warren Hood and\ndriven by the rhythm section of bassist Joe Kyle Jr. and drummer Chuck\nHamilton\, the band filters genre through its own sensibilities and ends up\ntranscending it altogether\, conjuring up musical landscapes that defy boundaries\nand find common ground. Add in those spirited flights of improvisation and a\nhealthy dose of jaw-dropping chops and what emerges in the end is decidedly\nWaybacks. A trip well worth taking. \n“These guys can play like bandits.” ~ Ray Waddell\, Billboard \n“The musical maelstrom known as The Waybacks blew in from San Francisco\, sending up such a startling tornado of aggressively performed\, high-spirited melodies as to remove all air from the\nroom. Their inspirational combination of influences — not to mention their recklessly brazen breakneck pace — exposed the band as virtuosos sharing a singular mind-set.” ~ Buzz McClain\, The Washington Post \n“ … geniuses … whose playing stacks up to anything you’ll find.” ~ Brad Kava\, San Jose Mercury News \nFor more information on The Waybacks\, visit their website at Waybacks.com. Taylor — leader of the band Hiss Golden Messenger — is feeling alive. Joyful. Eternal\, he might say. For the GRAMMY nominated musician\, whose albums have traced an internal path through adulthood\, fatherhood\, spirituality\, and depression for well over a decade\, this is something new. \n“The tunes on ‘Jump for Joy’ were composed in free moments throughout 2022\, a year during which Hiss was on the road more or less constantly\,” explains Taylor. “And perhaps because the post-pandemic energy out in the world felt so chaotic and uncertain\, I found myself thinking a lot about the role that music has played in my life and how exactly I ended up in the rarefied position of leading a band and crew all over the globe through dingy graffiti-scrawled green rooms\, venerated music halls\, dust-blown roadside motels. Sometimes playing in front of 5\,000;\nsometimes 200. Sleeping sitting up. Laughing until my stomach hurts. Not being able to fall asleep at 3 a.m. in some anonymous bed because my mind is spinning with anxiety or depression or adrenaline\, or because my ears are still ringing. Robbing Peter to pay Paul\, then robbing Paul to pay Peter back. Over and over again. It’s an outlaw life but one\, I’m coming to realize\, that makes me happy.” \nThe songs that make up “Jump for Joy”—the sharpest and most autobiographical that Taylor has written under the Hiss name—read as a sort of epistolary\, postcards between the present-day\nsongwriter and his alias Michael Crow\, a teenaged dreamer very much like Taylor himself\, who trips his way through the 14 tunes that make up the record. In this way\, “Jump for Joy” is a meditation on a life lived with art\, and the ways that our hopes and dreams and decisions bump up against—and\, with a little bit of luck\, occasionally merge with—real life. \n“Creating this character became the way that I could explore these vulnerable\, tender moments that were so decisive in my life\, even if I didn’t know it at the time\,” explains Taylor. He continues:\n“Through Michael Crow\, I was able to get inside these places that exist so deep in my sense memory: Me at 16\, knowing intuitively that there had to be something out there for me\, something mysterious and divine that wasn’t full of fucked-up\, confusing pain; me with my hardcore band\, age 18\, wandering the vast expanses of Texas beneath a big\, fat tangerine moon\, scrounging change to fill the gas tank\, trying to make a soundcheck for a show that never happened. There’s me at 30\, having kids\, writing songs as though they were gravestone epitaphs\, not yet understanding that nothing is so permanent and serious and that I needed to be gentler with my spirit. There’s me at 35\, still chasing the thing because I’ve touched it once or twice and I know it’s the only way for me to feel whole and real and useful\, but in the rear-view mirror\, I can see everyone who gave up in search of something easier and not so heartbreaking.” \nProduced by Taylor and engineered by longtime Hiss compatriot Scott Hirsch over two weeks in the late fall of 2022 at the fabled Sonic Ranch studio in Tornillo\, Texas\, just a short walk from the Mexican border\, “Jump for Joy” dances with joyful\, spontaneous energy that feels like a fresh chapter in the Hiss Golden Messenger oeuvre. Taylor is accompanied throughout the album by his crack live band: guitarist Chris Boerner\, bassist Alex Bingham\, keyboardist Sam Fribush\, and drummer Nick Falk\, a collection of musicians that have helped make Hiss Golden Messenger’s live performances legendary affairs. \n“Jump for Joy\,” perhaps more than any other Hiss record heretofore\, is an elegant and nuanced melding of everything that makes Taylor and company’s work unique and beloved\, colored with an outward-facing elation and sense of openness that elevates the album into something truly timeless and special. \n“I knew that I needed this record to be full of joy because if we’re standing at some kind of finish line of human civilization—and I’m not saying that we are\, but some days it sure feels that\nway—then I want to go out dancing\,” laughs the songwriter. “That’s what I wanted “Jump for Joy” to feel like: Dancing at the end times.” \n  URL:https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org/event/1927-concert-series-featuring-hiss-golden-messenger/ LOCATION:VA CATEGORIES:Special Events ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/2024_BCM_1927Concert_HissGoldenMessenger-Web.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20240420T090000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20240420T123000 DTSTAMP:20240328T182608 CREATED:20240312T190226Z LAST-MODIFIED:20240326T164604Z UID:10030864-1713603600-1713616200@birthplaceofcountrymusic.org SUMMARY:Bristol Rhythm Green Team Plogging Event to Celebrate Earth Day 2024 DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Mother Earth with the Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion‘s Green Team plogging event!\n\nDate: Saturday\, April 20\, 2024 \nTime: 9:00 a.m. EDT \nLocation: Machiavelli’s Restaurant (8 5th Street\, Bristol\, TN) \nCost: Free to participate (beverages and food not included) \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER  \nPlogging is a community and environmentally focused way to exercise where you pick up trash as you walk/run. Upon arriving\, the Illinois-born singer/songwriter/actor pursued a major life change\, working 12-hour days on a local farm—a turn of events that catalyzed an extraordinary burst of creativity and redefined his sense of purpose as an artist. On his new album Rhumba Country\, LaFarge reveals his newly heightened devotion to making music that channels pure joy. “There was a time when I glorified sadness because I lost sight of who I was\, but now I understand that creating and expressing joy is my gift\, and gifts are meant to be shared\,” he says. Reclaiming his voice\, LaFarge has recorded his boldest album yet. \nRhumba Country was initially shaped from material that emerged while LaFarge was deep in work on the farm. “I’d be pushing a plow or scattering seeds\, and the songs would just come to me\,” he recalls. “It was tremendously inspirational and made me realize that apart from singing\, farming is perhaps the oldest human art form.” But as he moved forward with his songwriting\, something felt undeniably amiss. LaFarge then spoke with fellow Midwestern transplant Elliot Bergman (Wild Belle)\, who suggested he return to city life in Los Angeles for a season so that the two musicians could work together—a collaboration that soon brought the rhumba to LaFarge’s country. As he immersed himself in the album’s creation\, LaFarge began dreaming up a kaleidoscopic sound informed by his love of music from far-ranging eras and corners of the globe\, including mambo\, tropicália\, rocksteady\, and mid-century American rock-and-roll. Co-produced along with Chris Seefried and Bergman and recorded in L.A.\, the resulting Rhumba Country is an invitation to come together to celebrate life and love. “The songs that naturally come to me are upbeat and make you wanna dance or at least bop your head—they’re all very colorful\,” says LaFarge. “I used to think of my music in dark blue\, but now I see it in technicolor.” \nReflecting on the origins of Rhumba Country\, LaFarge points to one of the most crucial revelations he experienced while farming: a newfound understanding of the uniquely human potential to be “conduits of continuous creation.” To that end\, his effort to provide listeners with “medicine for the soul” has led LaFarge toward a deeper level of dedication when it comes to nurturing his own spirit. “You have to live the life you’re singing in your songs—no matter what you’re going through\,” he says. “Everything will come out in your music whether you want it to or not. I’ve realized that the more I can pursue goodness and live in peace\, the more I can make the music I was put here to make.” And by living with intention and fully connecting with his truest purpose\, LaFarge might finally be ready to lay his head in a place he calls home. \nFor more information about Pokey LaFarge and to purchase his music\, visit PokeyLaFarge.net. \n  \n  \n  URL:https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org/event/1927-society-concert-series-feat-pokey-lafarge/ LOCATION:VA CATEGORIES:Museum,Special Events ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/2024_BCM_1927Concert_PokeyLafarge-Web.png END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20240913 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20240916 DTSTAMP:20240328T182608 CREATED:20240306T213027Z LAST-MODIFIED:20240306T214240Z UID:10030863-1726185600-1726444799@birthplaceofcountrymusic.org SUMMARY:Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion 2024 DESCRIPTION:Dates: September 13-15\, 2024 \nLocation: State Street\, Historic Downtown Bristol\, TN-VA \nTickets: ON SALE NOW! \nThe award-winning Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion music festival celebrates 23 years in Historic Downtown Bristol\, TN-VA\, home of the legendary 1927 Bristol Sessions! \nHeadliners include 49 Winchester\, Ashley McBryde\, The Wallflowers\, The Red Clay Strays\, Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway\, Sam Bush\, Wilderado\, The SteelDrivers\, Brittney Spencer\, Drayton Farley\, Jaime Wyatt\, Bella White\, Silverada\, Grace Bowers\, and many\, many more! \nBristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion is an electrifying\, three-day music experience that features the very best roots music on more than a dozen stages.
