J.T. Adams was raised in Sulphur Springs, Texas, served in the Navy Air Corps in WWII, received a Bachelors in Music Education from Texas Christian University, then a Masters in Music Education from East Texas State University. After receiving his masters degree he joined the faculty of East Texas State University. Beginning in 1952, J. T. Adams and his group, the Men of Texas, recorded some of the best Gospel music to be released on a country label, Republic, based in Nashville.

In 1956, he moved to the Word label in Waco, Texas. In the mid 1960's he started Carol Records and Carol Press Publishing Company ( named for his daughter Carol). In the mid to late1960's he moved to the Fort Worth area of Texas. By the mid 1980's he and wife Judy moved to Greensboro, North Carolina. From August 1990 until his death in September 1993 he served as Director of Music and Drama at the Cathedral of His Glory in Greensboro.
