Music has been present in the hills and hollers of Appalachia from the days of the earliest settlers. They brought with them a variety of musical and cultural traditions - Anglo and African, Urban and Rural, Popular and Folk - as they were fused together to form a distinctive style of music. Today, there is an increased interest in the music that developed in the hills of Appalachia - whether it is called hillbilly, string-band, old-time, bluegrass, or country music – a musical art form that is very much alive today.
